Democracy in Albania is in hard need of a ‘For Dummies’ manual. Ever since the existence of the mini country in 1912 the Albanian government has been imprisoning, torturing and murdering the Greek minority. This year in May already, a Greek mayor had been elected in the town of Heimarra. But instead of being sworn in, he was arrested and has been in prison ever since. No-one is able to get him out until now.

You can read some of what the Albanian government has done more to the Greeks in a century’s time here on your right. When the country finally opened its borders after 60 year in 1989, the Albanians ran in masses to Greece and later also to Italy. Neither the Greek nor the Italian government did anything more to keep the many criminals among them out of the country than build a wall. Never has any Albanian been falsely accused, imprisoned, tortured or killed. Yet look what they did to the Greeks.

They destroyed their churches, prohibited them from speaking Greek and jailed or even killed them for nothing. And this year in May a Greek gentleman, Mr. Fredi Beleris, has been elected as the mayor of a town in Albania called Heimarra. Instead of neatly swearing the man in and letting him do his job, they falsely accused him of voter-buying fraud. As you can read on your right side, more candidates have been (falsely) accused of fraud, but only Mr. Beleris was imprisoned on May 12 this year.

Even though the Greek government, that really doesn’t intervene in anything that happens to Greek citizens abroad, has used all its diplomacy to get Beleris freed, he is still jailed and hasn’t taken the oath. His innocence has been proven many times loud and clear, but Albania just doesn’t want a Greek mayor. If it is because of Islam versus Christianity, well, probably. There is nothing else to imagine since Mr. Beleris didn’t commit any voter-buying or other fraud. To make it all even worse, Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama has just  appointed another mayor. A person who hasn’t even been elected. Viva la democracia albanés!

If you also want an apotheose, you’ve got one: the Albanian news website Vox News has the guts to write that a witness – against Mr. Beleris as it seems – gave up and even fled the country. “Beleris’s gang would be responsible if anything happened to my father”, the man allegedly said. There is not even one Greek gang in the whole world. Greeks are no gangsters, I think everyone knows that! Underneath the article you find the link to the source.

This month talks between the EU, Skopje and Tirana would start for the first step of accepting North Macedonia and Albania in the EU. Since Fredi Beleris hasn’t been freed however, Greece has vetoed the talks. Since nothing happened afterwards, we can draw our conclusions: Albania finds it more important to be an oppressive dictatorship than to have some progress for its people by joining Europe.
