Professional oath

When I became a journalist in early 2020, I wanted to put the international code for journalists on my website. Surprise!!! There are many such codes and how can you know which one is the best? Moreover, when I graduated from my Master’s degree at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, I swore a Real Ancient Greek Professional Oath. Each graduate does that in our country and so I translated it into English and Dutch. Here it is! It fits a journalist just as well as a teacher, a translator, an engineer, a doctor, a psychologist, a lawyer or a judge perfectly, doesn’t it?

Καθομολόγησις Πτυχιούχου

Του πτυχίου της Φιλοσοφίας αξιωθέντες όρκον ομνύομεν προ του Κοσμήτορος και των Προέδρων των Τμημάτων της Φιλοσοφικής Σχολής και πίστην καθομολογούμεν τήνδε.

Από του ιερού περιβόλου του σεπτού τούτου τεμένους των Μουσών εξερχόμενοι, κατ’επιστήμην βιωσόμεθα, ασκούντες ταύτην δίκην θρησκείας, εν πνεύματι και αληθεία. Ούτω χρησίμους ημάς αυτούς καταστήσομεν προς άπαντας τους δεομένους της ημετέρας αρωγής και εν πάση ανθρώπων κοινωνία, αεί προς ειρήνην και χρηστότητα ηθών συντελέσομεν, βαίνοντες εν ευθεία του βίου οδώ, προς την αλήθειαν και το δίκαιον αποβλέποντες και τον βίον ανυψούντες εις τύπον αρετής υπό τη σκεπήν της σοφίας.

Ταύτην την απαγγελίαν επιτελούσι, είη ημίν, συν τη ευλογία των ημετέρων καθηγητών και πεφιλημμένων διδασκάλων, ο Θεός εν τη βίω βοηθός.

Oath for graduate

Having earned the degree in Philosophy, we swear an oath before the Dean and the Chairs of the Departments of the Faculty of Philosophy and profess our faith in them. Coming out of the sacred precincts of this venerable temple of the Muses, we live scientifically, practicing our belief in God in spirit and truth. Thus we shall become useful to all those who need our help and to all people in society, may we work for peace and good morals, walking in the straight path of life, looking towards truth and justice and raising life as a type of virtue under the roof of wisdom. Let us perform this recitation together with the blessing of our professors and beloved teachers. May God help us in life.

Eed voor afgestudeerde

Als degenen die het diploma van de Letterenfaculteit waardig zijn, leggen wij een eed af in aanwezigheid van de Decaan en de Voorzitters van de Secties van de Letterenfaculteit en wij belijden ons vertrouwen in hen.

Vertrekkende vanuit het heilige terrein van deze vererenswaardige tempel van de Muzen, zullen wij leven naar de wetenschap, het geloof in God zowel in de geest als in waarheid uitoefenend. Dientengevolge maken wij ons overal waar we komen, dienstbaar aan eenieder die onze hulp behoeft en stellen wij ons ten opzichte van alle mensen op met een houding van vrede en goede moraal, terwijl wij recht door het leven gaan, met als doel de waarheid en het recht; en wij zullen het leven verheffen tot een uitdrukking van deugd onder het dak van wijsheid.

De inhoud van deze voordracht voeren wij uit met de zegen van onze hoogleraren en geliefde leraren; God zij met ons.
